There are many different offerings at the one-day Ropin’ Rascals special needs children’s charity event in Keenesburg. Children can participate in rodeo-themed events in an indoor rodeo arena: therapeutic horseback riding, roping lessons, John Deere Gator rides, tractor rides, barrel racing on a stick-horse and stagecoach tours. Through the charity event, these exceptional children build and strengthen their community by coming together to play, collaborate and just enjoy their time together – kids being kids! Every event is safely supervised on the ranch.
Equestrian therapy is rooted in ancient Greece, but its modern form used for physical health dates to the 1960s, and its use in mental health dates to the 1990s. Modern horse therapy was pioneered by Lis Hartel of Denmark, who won the silver medal for dressage at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games despite being a wheelchair-user because of polio. At the Keenesburg ranch, therapeutic horseback riding is used to stretch and strengthen muscles and develop balance, confidence and coordination.
In the Old West, cowboys and cowgirls would rope calves to brand them or to perform medical treatment on them. They took pride in their roping speed, which eventually led to competitions. Roping enjoys very similar benefits to therapeutic riding — stretching and strengthening muscles and tone; improved balance, motor skills, focus and coordination. All those benefits build confidence. With roping lessons, the cowboys and cowgirls at the Keenesburg ranch get to recreate the original thrill and enjoy the health benefits.
There are plenty of fun activities at the sponsored children’s charity event in Keenesburg. Special needs children can get the full cowboy or cowgirl experience by going for rides on the John Deere Gator, riding on a tractor, participating in barrel racing on stick horses, and even taking a stagecoach tour of the Keenesburg ranch. There are eight stations set up throughout the Huwa ranch. Each is supervised by volunteers, and each focus on a different activity.
Help the annual Ropin’ Rascals one-day children’s charity event continue to grow! Sponsors and charity event volunteers help special needs boys and girls transform into cowboys and cowgirls for a day. The event occurs in a setting mirroring the Old West at a working ranch in Keenesburg. The children will build memories to last a lifetime, and the proceeds benefit local special needs charities.
